In my experience, the most improvement in performance is gained from an SSD upgrade with additional memory being second. I hadn't initially planned to do anything with the Macbook but since it was in such good shape and since it seemed perfectly usable even in today's world, I decided I ought to upgrade it a bit. I clocked it at just over one minute (60 seconds) to boot from chime to login. The most notable area needing improvement being startup time. It performed about as you'd expect for a 9 year old Macbook. Using the Macbook with Yosemite was an alright experience. There are tons of them under $100 and with another $100 in upgrades, you can have a machine capable of performing any modern day task including YouTube and Photoshop image processing. In my opinion, this is one of the best bang-for-the-buck MacBook's out there. No cracks, chips, discoloration and hardly any scuffs or scratches in the polycarbonate case. This particular Macbook looked nearly new. The system included 4GB of memory and a 128GB 5400 RPM SATA hard drive. For $84, I got one of the last A1158 models made an early-2009 A1158 with a 2.0 ghz Intel Core2Duo processor, Nvidia Geforce 9400M graphics and running OSX Yosemite. Recently, I found a good deal on a white Macbook A1158 (mid-2009) on eBay and snagged it.
